3 Teachings for Humanity from Goddess Brigid

Brigid came to me to teach us a few old wisdoms at Imbolc. She had many things to share about humanity and learning how to live by observing the natural cycles of the world. Here are three examples she shared to explain this to us through metaphor and imagery.

1. Living in Harmony as a Community

Brigid, sitting on a woodland floor under a horse chestnut tree, showed me the soil by running her fingers through it.
"Look at the way in which all of nature works in synergy. Each creature's existence compliments the next. The trees have grown the leaves. When the leaf sheds, it falls to the ground and is decomposed by bacteria and insects. These are eaten by the birds who digest them and then fertilise the soil. This soil feeds the tree to grow the leaves again. This is a metaphor for a peaceful life. For how communities could all work together to thrive. How the rich could help the poor. The healthy could help the weary. How everyone could lend a helping hand when a neighbour is in need. This cycle in nature is a blueprint for humanity living in harmony."

2. Equality and Acceptance in a Community

"Notice the harvest cycle. Everyone in a community, tribe or family comes together and works in harmony for a successful harvest. In Ireland this was the way only 50 years ago. Different people contribute at different stages from preparing the soil, tilling, planting seeds, watering, weeding and finally reaping. Someone with little physical strength will not participate in tilling but will be excellent at seed planting. The strong will take on the task of weeding while the wise elders will know the weather patterns and when to water. Each person's strengths are appreciated and weaknesses lovingly understood. Everyone is accepted for who they are. Only what they are capable of is expected of them. When it comes time to celebrate the harvest, all are congratulated on a team effort. It takes people of every skill to work together in unity for success.”

3. Raising our Children with Kindness

Brigid is now petting a baby fox, playing with it as you would a kitten. This fox is being raised to be tame and affectionate.
“It does not need to learn how to be a hunter or to fight for its food. It knows that it is cared for and all of its needs will be met. Because of this it has not explored it’s wild nature.” Brigid explains, “However, if a situation came about where the foxes' cunning skills were needed, it’s nature would kick in and it would be able to defend itself. In the same way a child does not need to be raised with trauma in order to know how to deal with challenges when they come along. This is an outdated belief system. Raising children with kindness and gentleness will teach them to behave that way and offer it to others around them. But, it will not deprive them of their survival skills if they are needed. The new paradigm for humanity is of love, compassion and equality.”
